WIRKSWORTH & MIDDLETON CRICKET CLUB was established by Francis Hurt in 1849, so in 2024 the club celebrates 175 years
We are proud to be the longest surviving group in continuous existence in Wirksworth, apart from the parish church. Wirksworth men played in the first match recorded in Derbyshire history in 1757 on Brampton Moor near Chesterfield, so men were playing and winning well before Hurt and Arthur Harwood got them organised in 1849. The club combined happily with Middleton CC. (founded 1879) in 2008.
We are marking the 175th year with a day of celebration on SUNDAY 7TH JULY
from 2.00pm at The Wirksworth Recreation Ground, Derby Road, Wirksworth DE4 4AS
There will be a 20:20 celebration match between The John Thompson X1, to remember John who served our club for sixty years, and The President’s X1, playing for Richard Needham.
Andy and Pete Thompson will be joined by friends of The Thompson Family and with current and ex-club players of all ages in both teams.
We will also remember Rosie Thompson and Peter Bell who were great supporters of our club, with Peter playing and supporting alongside John for many years. There will be two benches with plaques in their names so we can sit and remember them.
The match will begin at 2.00pm, the bar will be open and after the match from around 6.00 pm there will be live music.
All past and present members, friends and family, players, Vice Presidents and sponsors are warmly invited to come. This is a pop -in occasion, so you do not have to commit many hours, and we hope you will want to visit and join us in celebrating this remarkable anniversary.
